Connect Services Terms of Use

The following apply to all Connect services
  1. You must adhere to the Brunel Acceptable Computer Use Policy, the Brunel University network Security Policy, and the university Ordinances and Regulations at all times. Each device ('device' includes but is not limited to computers, tablets, smartphones and games consoles) using ResNet, Wifi@Brunel, AnyConnect VPN is subject to these rules.

  2. Brunel University is not an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is under no obligation to provide the same services as an ISP. ResNet, Wifi@Brunel, AnyConnect VPN allow limited access to the Internet via the Brunel University network and JANET (Joint Academic Network), therefore some internet services may be blocked, filtered or restricted.

  3. You must not run any form of server or interactive service able to be accessed from outside Brunel University.

  4. It is mandatory to pass our security checks in order to gain access to the internet. Until you have met these mandatory checks, and thereafter if your computer falls below our security standards in place at the time of the attempted connection, your connection will remain isolated from the rest of the network and Internet. Whilst isolated you can still access the Connect Portal (http://connect.brunel.ac.uk) to remediate these checks..

  5. Network traffic which uses peer-to-peer file-sharing software (including torrents), or any software which copies, distributes or views digital material subject to copyright restrictions, is blocked on the Brunel University network.

  6. Any software or third-party sites used to gain access to services other than those permitted (including, but not limited to, proxy bypass systems, proxy avoidance systems, Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnelling and any other kind of tunnelling protocol) will be considered a breach of the terms and conditions. The list of available services is subject to change without notice.

  7. The use of unlicensed or illegal software is not permitted on the Brunel University network. Do not attempt to use any such software on any personal computer that you connect to the Brunel University network.

  8. Any method of deliberate falsification, or wilful neglect, of information identifying your computer on the Brunel University network is considered a breach of the terms and conditions of use.

  9. The Computer Centre reserves the right to disconnect or suspend, without warning, any connection that appears to be associated (or to have been associated) with misuse or violation of these terms and conditions of use.

  10. Wherever and whenever service is unavailable due to operational maintenance or a network fault, the restoration of service to the core (academic and administration) networks will take priority over the ancillary networks (including ResNet, Wifi@Brunel, and AnyConnect VPN).

  11. You must only use the network IP address that is assigned to you via DHCP. Only one concurrent network IP address is permitted per user for each directly connected device.

  12. Network access is provided primarily to enhance the learning, teaching, research and administrative activities of the University. You must therefore exercise moderation in the use of network resources. The university reserves the right to restrict service and recover costs incurred by you if your usage is deemed excessive or injurious to the free flow of primary network business.

  13. Access to ResNet, Wifi@Brunel, or AnyConnect VPN is not considered by the University to be a necessary pre-condition for the completion of academic studies or course work. Therefore, neither restrictions nor unavailability of any or all of these services will be considered grounds for appeals or extensions to course work or academic studies. The university offers, through central provision, access to public work area computers for the carrying out of academic study and practise.

The following apply to the ResNet and Wifi@Brunel services only
  1. You are only permitted to connect a device to ResNet or Wifi@Brunel if you are a registered member of the university (i.e, a student, an employee or an authorised university third-party with a current, valid, qualifying Brunel University network account).

  2. The connection of routers, switches, hubs and wireless access points to Brunel University’s network is strictly prohibited. Connection of these devices will result in your service being suspended or terminated. Connection sharing (any kind of software routing from a device connected to the Brunel Network) is also prohibited.

The following apply to the ResNet service only
  1. You must not attempt to dismantle the network wall socket; this is not user-serviceable and is the property of Brunel University. Only staff authorised by the Brunel University Computer Centre are permitted to inspect and perform repairs to network wall sockets. During the occupancy of your room in residences, you will be charged for any damage to the socket before attempting to use the service. We strongly recommend that on occupation of your room, you carry out a visual and non-invasive inspection of the socket and report any damage found to the Connect team.

The following apply to the Wifi@Brunel service only
  1. In order to connect to the Wifi@Brunel network, you will need to configure your computer’s wireless network settings as specified by the Computer Centre.

The following apply to the AnyConnect VPN (Virtual Private Network) service only
  1. Approved Brunel University students, employees and authorised third parties (including, but not limited to, contractors and vendors) may utilise the benefits of VPN, which is a "user managed" service. This means that the user is responsible for their connection to the Internet, i.e. selecting an Internet Service Provider (ISP), coordinating installation, installing any required software, and paying associated fees. Further details may be found in the Remote Access Policy.

  2. It is the responsibility of any person accorded VPN privileges to ensure that no unauthorised user is allowed access to the Brunel University internal network, and that no unauthorised use is made of the network.

  3. VPN use will be controlled using either a one-time password authentication such as a token device, a digital certificate server or a public/private key system with a username and strong pass phrase. Such systems will be provided and operated by Brunel University Computer Centre on behalf of the University.

  4. The public or pre-shared key for operational reasons may be changed without notice. Under normal circumstances, keys will be issued through the Connect Portal (http://connect.brunel.ac.uk), two weeks prior to the change. The University reserves the right to waive this period of notice if necessary to maintain security and business continuity. This does not apply to the AnyConnect VPN service.

  5. When actively connected to the corporate network, VPN will force all traffic to and from the PC over the VPN tunnel: all other traffic will be dropped. Direct access to the internet will be permitted during a session but will be subject to the above restrictions. Unrestricted access to the Internet (via your ISP) will be restored when the VPN connection is terminated.

  6. Dual (split) tunnelling is not permitted; only one network connection is allowed.

  7. VPN gateways will be set up and managed by Brunel University Computer Centre on behalf of the University.

  8. VPN users will be automatically disconnected from Brunel University's network after thirty minutes of inactivity, a session is limited to 24 hours at the absolute maximum. The user must then logon again to reconnect to the network.

  9. Only the Brunel University approved VPN clients may be used.

  10. By using VPN technology with personal equipment, users must understand that their machines thereby become a de facto component of Brunel University's network, and as such are subject to all the rules and security policies laid out and/or referenced in this document.
