New Cisco Secure (previously AnyConnect) VPN Security Requirements

To connect to the Brunel University London network remotely such as when working from home, you need to connect via the Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Below are the current criteria to successfully access the Brunel VPN service.

  Devices must be either:

  • Registered as a personal device known as BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) or under a Community on the Connect Portal
  • Managed by SCCM (Software Centre Configuration Manager) and joined to the Brunel Windows AD (Active Directory)

Conditions 

  • Devices must reveal their operating system and MAC address via the AnyConnect VPN client
  • Users must subscribe to use the AnyConnect VPN service on the Connect Portal regardless of which type of device they use
  • BYOD and Community devices can only be used by the registered owner or assigned owner
  • BYOD Windows devices must be registered using the Connect Assistant and pass a security posture
  • Users must not be subject to a security infringement
  •  Devices must not be subject to a security infringement
  • User’s Windows AD account must not be disabled.

If you fail, the Cisco AnyConnect Client will display the following error message after logging in with your network username and password.

Is your device registered?

  •  You can check your registered devices at connect.brunel.ac.uk/mydevices. 
  • To register a new device, simply click “New Device” and follow the step by step guide.  

       Are you subscribed to the VPN service?

  •      This only needs to be done once, visit connect.brunel.ac.uk/ConnectTo.  Select AnyConnect VPN from the list, then read and accept the terms and conditions. Once completed, you have successfully activated the VPN service.

       Has your Windows device passed security checks?

  •      Windows devices must pass the Connect Assistant security checks. You can view the security status of your device at connect.brunel.ac.uk/mydevices. If there is an issue, it will be flagged with the details. 

        Are you using a mobile device?

  •      Ensure the device is registered and try using WiFi instead of cellular data
  •      Turn off any randomising MAC option. Should you require assistance with VPN access via a mobile device, use the contact details below.

If you have passed all the above checks and still cannot connect to the VPN service, please contact the IT Service Desk at ITServiceDesk@brunel.ac.uk to raise a ticket.
